About CodersGround FAQ (6)

Content Management Systems or CMS for short are internet bases systems that design, organize, and manage websites and provide an easy way for anyone to update and manage the website.

What Can a CMS Do For You?

Web developers initially developed a website by creating web pages on their local computers, using an FTP program to move those files over to their web server, and then those pages became available via their website. If any changes were needed, they would begin the process a new by going through the process again. Some simplified the process by using Server Side Includes (SSI), which cut the number of pages that needed to be updated down, since an include which contained the site’s menu could be updated and used throughout the site without any additional changes being required.

The problems began when a website went beyond the traditional “brochure-ware” design and delved into dynamic content, fresh material and live communities. Websites need to be able to be updated daily, with different people adding content as it becomes available, along with some content that is updated automatically through the use of RSS feeds. Content Management Systems came to be a useful part of a web developer’s toolbox. The problem then came to be, which CMS is best for me? How much is it going to cost me in terms of money and a learning curve? What features does each CMS offer that my business requires? In this tutorial we’ll discuss a few free (and almost free) CMSes, tell you what they offer, and help you get started with your own website.

Open Source CMS to the Rescue

Although there are many open source CMSes available, we’re going to focus on those that are based upon PHP. The following CMSes are thus PHP-based, and use a MySQL database. The advantages of using such a CMS include portability, support and a large developer base with frequent updates and improvements. We will discuss the following four CMSes:

Cloud Hosting FAQ (9)

Registering a domain name builds your credibility on the Internet. Use domain names to support your business and assist in creating a dynamic online presence. Your domain name establishes your online identity and increases branding, marketing and communication opportunities. Register multiple domain names to:

  • Keep your competition from registering a domain name that draws customers away from you.
  • Promote the products and services you offer.
  • Drive more traffic to your website.
  • Enjoy more opportunities to market to — and be listed on — search engines.
  • Create distinct advertising strategies to reach different target markets.
  • Provide customers more ways to find you on the Internet.
  • Capture common misspellings of your domain name, instead of sending visitors to an error page.
  • Protect your brand and online identity from unsavory parties.

To get started, check to see if the domain name you want is available. If available, register the domain name for a period of time you specify during the checkout process.

Checking a Domain Name’s Availability

Go to the hosting.codersground.com Home Page.

In the Domain Name Search field, enter the domain name you want to register, and then select the domain name extension from the list.

Click GO.

If the domain name you requested is already registered, we provide available alternatives. For example, you might be able to select a .info or .ws domain extension, rather than .com. Or you could register www.coolexample.info instead of www.coolexample.com.

If the domain name is available, follow the instructions to complete the checkout process. Be sure to include valid contact information for each contact. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the governing body for domain names, requires valid contact information (registrant, technical, billing, and administrative). If you enter false information, your domain name can be canceled.

Your contact information is public and accessible through the Whois database at most registrars. However, you can protect your privacy by registering your domain name with us using our private domain name registration services.

When you purchase a private domain name registration through our affiliate company, Domains By Proxy® (DBP), the Whois database lists DBP’s name, postal address, and phone number — instead of your personal contact information.

Registering a domain name does not automatically activate a website that displays when visitors enter your domain name into a Web browser. The domain name must have a hosted website that includes a numeric address, called an IP address, for visitors to access the website using your domain name.

Your domain name and its associated IP address are stored in a common database along with every other domain and associated IP address that are accessible via the Internet.

When visitors enter your domain name into a Web browser, the browser request uses your domain name to find the domain name’s associated IP address and, therefore, the website. People use domain names instead of IP addresses because it is easier to remember a name rather than a series of numbers.

When you register a domain name, you do not have to host a website. But once you have the domain name, you can point the domain name to your website hosting account.

For new .com and .net domain names and updates, allow up to eight hours for changes to become effective. Allow up to 48 hours for changes made to all other domain name extensions to become effective. This delay is because of the number of networks and agencies involved in the Internet structure. Delays apply to all domain names and registrars. Please allow for this delay when planning websites or configuring a domain name to work with your email.

A domain name represents a physical point on the Internet — an IP address. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) governs coordination of the links between IP addresses and domain names across the Internet. With this standardized coordination, you can find websites on the Internet by entering domain names instead of IP addresses into your Web browser.

Here’s an example: Think of a street address for a house or business — let’s say the White House. The street address, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is an exact location — like an IP address. You might not know the exact street address, but when you visit Washington, D.C., you can tell your cabbie that you want to visit the White House and still get there. This is how a domain name is used: It’s an easy way to reach the exact location of a website without having to remember the numeric address.

A domain name consists of, at least, a top-level and a second-level domain. Domain names must be registered with an ICANN-accredited registrar. CodersGround Hosting is an ICANN-accredited registrar, and you can register domain names through them here.

Many TLDs, also called extensions, can be registered by anyone. The extensions .com, .net, and .org are good examples that anyone can register.

Others, primarily country-code extensions (ccTLDs), have residency requirements — like .eu (representing the European Union) and .us (representing the United States).

Still others, like .aero, .biz, .edu, .mil, .museum, .name, and .pro, are restricted to a certain type of entity or community — like .edu, which is reserved for educational entities and .gov, which is reserved for government agencies.

It’s wise to register your domain name for as long as possible, typically 5 years is the minimum. This is due to Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines algorithms taking into account domain registration duration. The reason why is a lot of scammers and fly by night operations register their domain name for just a year to cut costs, and the search engines weigh this factor in determining your website’s position in the search results pages on popular search engines.

Yes, hosting customer service and support is available 24/7 by telephone, email, and live chat.

Example of a domain name: www.mycompany.com

Email Address
An email address works in conjunction with a domain name and is identified by the @ symbol. There is always some text before and after the @ symbol. The text before the symbol can be anything you desire. The text after the symbol is the domain name the email address is associated with.

Example of an email address: me@mycompany.com

Your domain name and hosting account go togther, but each one has a specific role in hosting your website. You cannot have a website without a domain name and hosting account programmed to work together.

A domain name is an alpha numeric representation of an IP Address, which is a numeric code that looks like this: 127.0.0.1. and actually “points to” the domain name, for example: www.yourname.com.

A hosting account is where all the files are stored that enable your website to be available through the internet. This includes graphics, code, scripting, and other elements that make a website operate correctly. Hosting accounts come in different varieties depending on your needs from a simple shared hosting account to virtual dedicated and dedicated hosting accounts. The choice of hosting account depends on how complex your website is, how much traffic it receives, and preferred administrative options.

Website Design FAQ (2)

A website re-design is the process of updating a website to current and competitive standards. This is done either updating existing website using the client’s existing software OR re-creating the client’s website from scratch using the WordPress content management system.

The CodersGround web design team can create your website within 3 business days on average. While some projects take longer, due to being more involved, a 5-20 page website without advanced functionality is usually ready for first draft presentation within a week. If faster service is needed to meet an advertising deadline or other reason, we can provide rush service and design your website in as little as 48 hours.
